A stunning array of photos, 'Under One Sun'

Renato "Ron" Rampolla rose to acclaim in his home base of Tampa Bay and beyond for his intimate portraits of the unhoused and unfortunate along with other distinctive individuals.

He also creates striking abstracts and landscapes in both color and black-and-white. Whichever one you look at, you get a bit of his heart and soul. See 31 of his large-scale photos in the solo exhibition, "Under One Sun," described as a meld of aesthetics and emotion. Opening reception Jan. 12, 6-8 p.m., at Mount Dora Center for the Arts, 138 E. Fifth Ave., Mount Dora. Details: mountdoraart.com.

A Flock of Seagulls transports Mount Dora back to the 1980s

A Flock of Seagulls is one of those underrated bands that get dismissed as a one-hit wonder, but they pioneered a blend of transcendent synths and danceable rhythmic guitar rock that other bands imitated but never duplicated.

While just about everyone knows their chart-topping hit "I Ran (So Far Away)," the British band also enchanted 1980s teens and counter-culture new wavers with the dreamy "Space Age Love Song" and "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" from their groundbreaking self-titled debut album in 1982, propelling the band to a niche galaxy of stardom.

Mike Score, pictured how he looks today sans the iconic hairdo, is touring with a new version of his band A Flock of Seagulls this year, making a stop at the Mount Dora Music Hall Friday, Jan. 12.
Mike Score, pictured how he looks today sans the iconic hairdo, is touring with a new version of his band A Flock of Seagulls this year, making a stop at the Mount Dora Music Hall Friday, Jan. 12.

Instantly recognizable by the apt winged-hairdo of frontman/keyboardist/songwriter Mike Score and their sci-fi outfits, the band burned bright but fell off the rock radar in a flash. Interpersonal problems between Score and his brother/drummer/band founder, Ali, and the health issues of guitarist Paul Reynolds, prevented the band from living up to its full potential at the time.

The three played together for a short time with bassist Frank Maudsley, but Score is performing again with a new lineup at the Mount Dora Music Hall, 512 N. Baker St., on Jan. 12.

VHI-1 gathered the original Seagulls on the reality series "Bands Reunited" 20 years ago on Jan. 21, 2004. The reunion helped foment a reconciliation that later culminated with the original lineup recording the 2018 album "Ascension" with the Prague Symphony Orchestra. You can check out a breathtaking performance of "Space Age Love Song" with the orchestra on YouTube.

Opening the show, Miami band Ordinary Boys, led by vocalist A.J. Navarrete, will stoke the '80s nostalgia with covers of popular tunes by The Smiths and Morrissey. In fact, the origin of their name comes from Morrissey’s single "The Ordinary Boys" and in part to the cheeky, common Smiths' name. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at ci.mount-dora.fl.us/calendar.aspx.
