For this special edition of our Crate Digging series, we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop by discussing 10 essential Texas hip-hop albums with Big Jade. Check it out below, and be sure to see our exclusive merch featuring our Hip-Hop 50 design at the Consequence Shop.

Big Jade is from Beaumont, Texas — and she wants you to know it.

The rising rapper is a whirlwind, all charisma and quick thinking, as she cycles through the records from fellow Texans that have stayed on repeat in her circle over the years. She has a special affection for artists out of the Houston area, and a camaraderie with those who specifically hail from Beaumont, as she does. Her love for the place she was raised is the thread that ties Megan Thee Stallion’s enormously successful Tina Snow to a nostalgic record from Big Moe that was released in the year 2000. And, when she shouts out Travis Scott’s Utopia, she’s quick to clarify: “Only because he’s got Teezo [Touchdown] on there, and Teez is from Beaumont, Texas.”

As Big Jade has continued growing and expanding to audiences outside of her beloved Texas orbit, she’s been trying new things — she attended a writer’s camp recently, and learned that she prefers her comparatively unstructured format of working. She trusts what’s coming out of her brain, uninhibited, like the deliciously vulgar “Lick” off her 2023 project, I Can’t Help It. The day we chat, she’s rehearsing with dancers for an upcoming show, a first for her as she’s expanding the scope of her live performances.

Get to know Big Jade by diving into spending some time with 10 Texas-centric records she’s been loving for years, eight of which include her notes on what makes them great.

Megan Thee Stallion – Tina Snow

“Big Ole Freak” was one of my favorite ones off that. She was talking her shit. The way it came on, all slow… since I’m from Beaumont I’m one of the people who saw her from the beginning.

Lil Jairmy – Excuse My Absence

I like his Excuse My Absence. My homeboy, I gotta shout him out, because he put me on that. He has a song called “Chances Make Champions.” We’re still bumping that and getting fired up to that.

Beyoncé – Dangerously In Love

It’s gotta be Beyoncé, because I’m from Texas. I’ve never seen her in concert, and I just want to touch her; I heard someone bit her once, so I won’t do that.

I like that song “Baby Boy” with Sean Paul. I was on that hard.

Big Moe – City of Syrup

It’s gotta be Big Moe, because I did the freestyle with him for Hip-Hop 50. We got that. Houston’s bigger, but this is still a piece of Texas.

Erykah Badu – Mama’s Gun

“Bag lady/ You gon’ hurt your back,” you know. My mama put me on Erykah Badu. I fuck with a lot of her stuff, but on that specific project that’s my favorite one. She’s talking about baggage, and I’m always taking on other people’s shit.

Z-Ro – The Life of Joseph W. Mcvey

“I Hate U B***c” is probably one of my favorite ones out of all of them. My mama’s boyfriend would get mad at her and play that song, and that was my favorite shit. Every time she made me mad I’d just turn the song on then.

KenTheMan – 4 da 304’s

I love “He Be Like.” “Body smokin’ marijuana/ I get that shit from my mama” — know what I’m sayin’? She had the city turnt with that. I’m from Beaumont, so these are people that I be on. I feel her.

Travis Scott – Utopia

I ain’t gonna lie, only because he’s got Teezo [Touchdown] on there, and Teez is from Beaumont, Texas. You feel me?

Editor’s note: The interview concluded without Big Jade’s notes on her last two albums, but you can check them out below.
