For the first time since 2009, Monk’s about to be back on the case. Peacock’s original movie Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie is coming this December, with Tony Shalhoub returning as fan-favorite character detective Adrian Monk. In the new film, Monk returns to solve (as you might guess from the title) one last case — one that involves Molly (Caitlin McGee), a journalist and Monk’s soon-to-be-married stepdaughter.

The movie is an extension of the original USA Network series, in which a former police detective (Shalhoub) transitions to working as a private detective after his journalist wife is killed by a car bomb. His wife’s death also exacerbates his obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which ends up becoming an asset to his work as a crime-solver. Praised by many critics, the show won eight Emmy awards during its eight-season run, three of them by Shalhoub for his work as lead actor in a comedy series. (Despite its serious premise, Monk was one of USA’s “Blue Sky” procedural series, which offered lighter takes on crime narratives.)

There’s still a fair amount of time until A Monk Movie premieres on December 8th, but watching eight seasons of anything is pretty time-consuming. Fortunately, courtesy of Peacock, the producers of Monk have revealed the ten episodes they consider to be must-watches, should you want to dive into the show for the first time, or just refresh your memory of the original series. Find that list, along with Peacock’s commentary on why these ten are truly essential, below:

01. “Mr. Monk and the Candidate” (S1, E1) — The pilot episode, in which Monk partners with assistant-nurse Sharona to investigate his first murder, as he struggles with OCD.

02. “Mr. Monk and the Three Pies” (S2, E11) — We meet Monk’s estranged brother Ambrose (John Turturro), who’s agoraphobic, giving us more insight into the family’s backstory.

03. “Mr. Monk and the Red Herring” (S3, E10) — After Sharona leaves him, a devastated Monk finds a new assistant, Natalie (Traylor Howard).

04. “Mr. Monk and the Kid” (S3, E16) — Monk enjoys taking care of a toddler who’s related to an investigation, but realizes he’s in no shape to become a parent.

05. “Mr. Monk Goes Home Again” (S4, E2) — Monk makes up with his brother Ambrose as they await their father’s uncertain return.

06. ”Mr. Monk Bumps His Head” (S4, E11) — Tony Shalhoub’s Emmy-winning performance as an amnesia-striken Monk whose love for Trudy is so powerful, he cannot bring himself to be with another woman (played by Laurie Metcalf).

07. “Mr. Monk and the Actor” — Monk is star-struck by an actor (Stanley Tucci), who may play Monk in a TV movie but ultimately decides Monk is far too depressing.

08. “Mr. Monk Buys a House” (S7, E1) — Still reeling from his therapist Dr. Kroger’s untimely death, Monk finds a new therapist in Dr. Bell.

09. “Mr. Monk’s 100th Case” (S7, E7) — While being celebrated in a TV documentary, Monk must solve one of his biggest cases yet: catching a serial killer.

10. “Mr. Monk and the End” (S8, E15 & E16) — Monk finally solves the murder of his wife Trudy, and forges a relationship with Molly, the stepdaughter he never met.

Catch up on the above now — Monk is streaming on Peacock and Prime Video.
