Crate Digging is a recurring feature that takes a deep dive into music history to turn up several albums all music fans should know. In this edition, singer-songwriter Madison Beer chats through her go-to records.

Madison Beer always knew she wanted to sing; that much was clear from her beginnings posting covers on YouTube as a teenager, generating an enormous following in the process. In putting together her new record, Silence Between Songs (available today, September 15th), she’s fully confirmed her love for songwriting, too.

“I’ve grown in such an awesome place that now I’m confident in the fact I’m a songwriter as well, and I love writing music,” she explains. “It’s honestly now one of my favorite parts of the process.”

The other piece of that puzzle is her time in the director’s chair; she’s now assumed the responsibility of leading the visuals on most of her music videos. “I literally used to sprint home from school every day, go on my computer, and make little music videos on iMovie,” she recalls. “I’ve always loved directing and being a part of the visuals has always been equally important to me. So now, stepping into that director role has been such a fulfilling process.”

Beer is drawn to music that feels like it came from a deeply honest place, no matter what time period it was recorded in. She’s a bit of an old soul, reaching for records from The Beach Boys and The Zombies constantly; and when it comes to present-day artists, it’s those that aren’t worried about “what’s gonna work for radio and what’s gonna be big on TikTok.” She explains, “I’m really inspired by honesty and vulnerability.”

Read through Madison Beer’s picks below.

The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds

It’s an album that shaped me, and specifically with my new album, this was probably the most heavily referenced thing. It’s overall incredible and I just love it so much. I think that Brian Wilson is a genius, and I actually wasn’t a huge Beach Boys fan growing up — I was more of a Beatles person, and I don’t think that it’s like a One Direction vs. Justin Bieber thing where you could only like one or the other. But I was such a Beatles person my whole life that I never really tapped into The Beach Boys properly.

I had listened to the big ones and the hits, but I never really dove all the way in until probably three or four years ago, and I was just obsessed in every single way. And I feel like now I’ve watched everything that Brian Wilson’s ever like been in every movie that’s ever been made about The Beach Boys. I think that they just make music that I really align with. That album just really, really means a lot to me.

The Beatles – Revolver

It’s an impossible question to pick one Beatles album, but if I picked multiple, I would end up talking about every single one. I’m such a huge fucking Beatles person. Today, I’m gonna say Revolver. I really love this album, but Revolver and Rubber Soul are the two that I think, right now, in this current moment, are my favorites.

I just love The Beatles and love everything they do. I feel very inspired by them. I was lucky enough to see Paul McCartney at SoFi Stadium a couple months ago, which just the most moving moment of my life. I feel very blessed to live at the same time as some of them.

Lana Del Rey – Ultraviolence

I love her so much and it’s, again, one of those people where it’s hard for me to pick just one album or one thing, because I love every single thing that she does, but I’ll say Ultraviolence. She’s so poetic, and meeting her just made me even that much more of a fan. I think she’s such an incredible person and incredible artist. She’s been one of my favorite artists as long as I can remember, and then meeting her and now befriending her is so special because it’s actually really rare to meet somebody that you have on such a high pedestal already, and then have them live up to that. She blew me away.

Melanie Martinez – K-12

Another current female artist who I love and who inspires me is Melanie Martinez. I would say K-12 really had a huge impact on my life in so many ways. I don’t feel that my “Life Support” tour that I put on would have looked or been what it was without being heavily inspired by Melanie. I really, really love her, and I think that she’s so creative and so herself.

That’s something that I really am inspired by because I feel like there’s obviously a lot of pressure on artists these days to conform to what’s gonna work for radio and what’s gonna be big on TikTok and all that kind of stuff, and I really do respect when I see someone that is so true to themselves. I feel like Melanie is a really awesome example of that.

Daft Punk – Alive 2007

I really love that album. They’re like “Hi, this is techno music.” It’s really insane. Discovery is something that also shaped me in a huge way, but I listen to this live album all the time.

Billie Eilish – don’t smile at me

I want to shift things to one of my favorite people in the world. I remember listening to that EP as soon as it came out and thinking, “This is such an amazing artist.” That was actually when we first met, because I had reached out to her and  said, “You are unbelievable.” She’s grown to be a a good friend and I think that Billie is one of the one of the people that I can really think, “I’m so glad that you’re at the top; you deserve it so much and you are amazing.”

She’s just everything and more, and I’m always inspired by her. I’m always looking up to her in so many ways. Her growth has been unbelievable, and it’s just been so cool to watch her grow into the artist that she was always destined to be.

Radiohead – OK Computer

I love this album and love them. There’s so much I can say, but I think Radiohead has been like a huge inspiration in my life because I think they use chords that are super weird and interesting and different. I feel like their music really takes you on a journey in a huge way.

Tame Impala – Currents

This is sort of an obvious one, but also it did change my life. I have so many vivid memories attached to listening to this album for the first time and feeling like, “Wow, this is a whole new genre, a whole new approach to music.” It was so exciting to me. I literally have an “Eventually” tattoo. I just love Tame Impala so much and think Kevin Parker is such a genius.

Cigarettes After Sex – Cigarettes After Sex

It was their debut album, and that’s insane. I have it on vinyl and I play it all the time; this is one of the albums that still listening to constantly. I also have very vivid memories attached to it. It’s amazing.

The Zombies – Begin Here

I love this album so much. It’s literally one of my favorite things I’ve ever listened to. I love ’60s music so so much and I feel like this is such a pinnacle ’60s album that encompasses the decade so well. A lot of these songs inspired my album, so shoutout to The Zombies and shout out to Begin Here.
