10 Highlights from TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s New Album The Name Chapter: FREEFALL

The post 10 Highlights from TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s New Album The Name Chapter: FREEFALL appeared first on Consequence.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER are back with a brand new full-length album The Name Chapter: FREEFALL, and Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai are entering new territory with their latest effort. The quintet has left the dreamy Neverland setting of their last EP (The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION) and are now plummeting headfirst into reality and adulthood.

The Name Chapter: FREEFALL was preceded by the release of two bright collaborations: “Do It Like That” with the Jonas Brothers, and “Back For More” with Anitta (the final version of the album only includes the “TXT Version” of the latter). But with a slew of entirely new songs filling out the album, there’s plenty to dig into today, so we’ve rounded up 10 highlights from the group’s third studio album.

Editor’s Note: In celebration of TXT’s new album, our Limited Edition Collector’s Box at 10% off

01. Going Full Rock Mode on “Growing Pain”

There have been quite a few TXT songs that played with rock songs throughout the group’s discography (I’m partial to “0X1=LOVESONG” (I Know I Love You)” featuring Seori, personally). With “Growing Pain,” though, the guys don’t hold back, leaving any trace of pop elements at the door for a fully gritty and harder-edged experience. It’s incredibly fun hearing all five voices work in this space.

02. New Songwriting Milestones

The members of TXT have never been hands-off when it comes to their music, and The Name Chapter: FREEFALL features even more songwriting credits for the guys, including Taehyun and Yeonjun both working toon”Growing Pain” and “Happily Ever After.” All five members also contributed to the lyrics on “Blue Spring,” and Yeonjun’s name can also be spotted in the credits for “Deep Down.” Lastly, Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, and Hueningkai all chipped in on “Dreamer.”

03. Sewer Choreography in “Chasing That Feeling”

The whole music video for focus track “Chasing That Feeling” is such a blast. Soobin subway surfing! Beomgyu driving upside-down! But it’s hard to beat a scene early on when the first chorus hits and the guys deliver the track’s choreography from the depths of a sewer. It’s dramatic, it’s angsty, it’s everything we needed.

04. The Stellar Falsettos in “Dreamer”

One of the slower songs on The Name Chapter: FREEFALL, “Dreamer” features an appropriately dreamy chorus. As TXT recount their exit from Neverland and try to find a middle ground where dreams and imagination don’t disappear entirely, the vocals float higher and higher. The use of falsetto sticks the landing in the choruses.

05. “Blue Spring” Is Finally on Streaming!

Throughout their most recent world tour here in 2023, “Blue Spring” was featured in the set list, but MOA had no way to enjoy the track once the show was over. Finally, the love letter to TXT’s dedicated fans can be enjoyed wherever and whenever.

06. The Addictive Beat in “Deep Down”

“Deep Down” is far and away my pick for a favorite track off this project, and the garage-adjacent beat in the chorus simply rules. Placing this song immediately after “Dreamer,” where the vocals are sky-high, underscores the contrast in tone and highlights just how fun it is hearing the guys in their lower registers, too — especially for Soobin and Beomgyu, who seem to thrive there most. It’s a very sparse chorus, but the beat gives us everything.

07. The “La La La” Portion of “Happily Ever After”

Something about this song just feels so quintessentially TXT, doesn’t it? While this project is undoubtedly about pushing the quintet into more mature territory than ever before, both sonically and in the content of the music, it wouldn’t be a TOMORROW X TOGETHER project without at least one undeniably bouncy and bright offering. True to form, and recalling songs from previous albums like “Ice Cream,” the hopeful title and sound give way to more pessimistic lyrics, as it turns out the song is about how life is not a fairytale. We’re going to have fun listening to this one regardless.

08. The ’80s Energy in “Chasing That Feeling”

From the synths to the outright wink at the decade with the lyric “don’t stop believing” being dropped, the album’s single is dripping with ’80s vibes through and through. It’s a great concept for the guys — they trade off lines with characteristic ease and embrace the sparkle required to pull off the concept with confidence and charm. Naturally, the outfits featured in the music video tie it all together, too.

09. The Melodrama of “Skipping Stones”

This song sort of feels like if “Dear Sputnik” and “Lonely Boy” hung out — “Skipping Stones” isn’t quite as full-speed as “Growing Pain,” relishing the mid-tempo range. At the same time, this pace leaves room for the quintet to go all in on their vocal performances; it’s moody, it’s energetic, and it feels full and complete.

10. Taking Risks

Overall, The Name Chapter: FREEFALL shows TXT pushing themselves. Their evolution is an interesting one — hold this project up next to their Magic chapter or debut single, “Crown,” and you’d naturally wonder how one group got from Point A to Point B just in a few years. It’s exciting watching Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai follow their creative instincts to such ends, and it absolutely doesn’t feel like a loss that we’ve left Neverland for something grounded and wide open.
