9 can't-miss things to do this weekend include Pickaway County Fair, Clippers, movies

Thought the mercury has been rising to scorching temperatures lately, fun-seekers nevertheless will be looking to get out and about this weekend.

If you can stand the sizzle of the summer sun, the Pickaway County Fair runs through June 25, and the New Albany Symphony Orchestra will give an outdoor concert on  Saturday. There's also Clippers games all weekend, plus other open-air happenings.

If you're looking to get out to air-conditioned indoor events, take in the Bastille concert Friday night or CAPA's showing of the hilarious 1996 comedy, "The Birdcage" at the Ohio Theatre. You might also dig Shadowbox Live’s music and poetry revue “Flower Power: The Music and Movement."

Fingers crossed for fair weather

County fair season is underway, with Pickaway County taking the spotlight this week. Head to the Fairgrounds, 415 Lancaster Pike, Circleville, from Saturday to June 25 for fair food, carnival rides and dog, horse, sheep, llama, rabbit, poultry and other shows, as well as a host of kiddie tractor pulls and other events. Grandstand events — which include harness racing, motocross, autocross, tractor pulls and a demolition derby — are included with admission. Tickets cost $10 a day or $25 for a weekly pass, with kids 10 and younger free. (740-474-2085, pickawaycountyfair.org)

Waltz through a Vienna summer with New Albany Symphony

This weekend, the New Albany Symphony Orchestra will give a concert in its home city of New Albany, but its heart will be in Vienna. In “Summer in Vienna,” the symphony will perform classics associated with the European capital, including “The Blue Danube,” “Champagne Polka” and perhaps inevitably, selections from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical “The Sound of Music.” The outdoor concert will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Hinson Amphitheater, 170 W. Dublin-Granville Road. Wine and beer can be purchased during the event. General admission lawn tickets cost $24 to $26; tables cost $500. (www.newalbanysymphony.com)

CAPA Summer Movie Series to begin

Sure, you can watch classic movies on your big-screen TV, but no home-entertainment setup can compete with the Ohio Theatre. The grand former movie palace at 39 E. State St. will again host the CAPA Summer Movie Series, which kicks off this weekend with Francis Ford Coppola’s Mafia masterpiece “The Godfather,” starring Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. All screenings will also include live organ music by Clark Wilson. Tickets cost $6, or $5 for senior citizens. (www.capa.com)

Weathervane Playhouse to present 'Steel Magnolias'

"If you can’t say anything nice about anybody, come sit by me.” That’s just one of the wisecracks tossed around between the feisty Southern women, friends through their small-town Louisiana beauty salon, in “Steel Magnolias.” Weathervane Playhouse continues its summer-stock season with Robert Harling’s off-Broadway ensemble comedy-drama at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. June 22-25 at 100 Price Road, Newark. Happy hippies come alive in 'Flower Power'

“Flower Power: The Music and Movement,” Shadowbox Live’s music and poetry revue, celebrates the late-1960s hippie music and culture that inspired social change. The original company-created production, which incorporates many of that era’s popular rock songs (such as “Aquarius,” “Feelin’ Alright,” “For What It’s Worth” and “Gimme Some Lovin”), continues at 2 p.m. Sunday, 7:30 p.m. June 23, 2 p.m. July 31; and select 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 28 at 503 S. Worthington Arts Festival is back!

Back for the first time since 2019, the Worthington Arts Festival will host 115 juried artists displaying and selling their work on the lawn of the McConnell Arts Center, 777 Evening St., Worthington. The festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Besides ample art, the festival features a kids' scavenger hunt, indigo dye demonstrations and plenty of food trucks. Visitors also can take in the current exhibitions at the art center. Batter up! Clippers on deck

The Columbus Clippers will be at home at Huntington Park, 330 Huntington Park Lane, all weekend, facing off against the St. Paul Saints. At 7:05 p.m. Friday, enjoy discount beverages and pizza during $5 Friday, and meet Smokey Bear and some native Ohio animals when the Ohio Department of Natural Resources visits the park. Saturday at 5:05 p.m. brings “Party at the Park,” with Right on Main performing before the game. 'The Haunting of Night Vale' a spirited tale

Be prepared for terror, humor and more than a few surprises when the folks from the “Welcome to Night Vale” podcast appear for the live “The Haunting of Night Vale” at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St. Cecil Baldwin, the voice of Night Vale, will be joined by musical guests Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin for a new story set in the haunted little desert town, complete with weather reports, news, sheriff's reports and a multitude of mysterious happenings. Back in the saddle again with Morgan Gold Cup

Horses galore, and riders of all ages, will be competing in the Morgan Gold Cup Regional Horse Show, running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Saturday at the Ohio Expo Center, Interstate 71 and East 17th Avenue. Take a seat in the stands and observe competitions including Free Style Reining, Ladies' Classic Pleasure Driving, Hunt Seat Equitation, and many more, with categories ranging from those 6 and younger on up.
