10 Big Takeaways From ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Super Bowl Teaser

10 Big Takeaways From ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Super Bowl Teaser

Our first look at this summer’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is finally here, thanks to a 45-second spot that dropped during the Super Bowl. While we wait for the full trailer to land during “Good Morning America” on Monday, let’s take a closer look at what we’ve got. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you can check it out right here.

Oh look, it’s Donald Glover as Lando.

We all pretty much agree that Glover’s Lando is far and away the most intriguing thing about “Solo,” especially after “Jump Street” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the project and Ron Howard stepped in to reshoot most of it. And he’s also the most exciting thing about this trailer. He’s a perfect Lando.

Here we get to see Alden Ehrenreich in his full Han Solo getup, and he actually looks uncomfortably like a young Harrison Ford — at least in this shot he does. Though he appears in several different shots, this is the only clear look we get of his face. And it’s not even all that clear! Weird.

Here’s a fascinating bit: this is the corridor inside the Millennium Falcon, which in all its previous appearances was a more yellowish-brown color instead of this stark white. Presumably, this part of the movie is before Han takes possession from Lando, who unsurprisingly would be more into keeping it clean than Han would be.

Speaking of the Falcon…

Here’s Han looking wistfully at the ship. This shot has the feel of him seeing it for the first time up close, but that’s just a guess.

There’s this sequence in the middle of the teaser that looks like an honest-to-god car chase. It wouldn’t technically be the first “Star Wars” movie to have a car chase — that honor goes to “Attack of the Clones,” which featured an airspeeder chase — but it would be the first “traditional” ground-based car chase for the franchise. Interesting!

Here we have what is probably the main villain’s obligatory Weird TIE Fighter. Flying through some kind of lightning-filled cloud beneath a Star Destroyer. There’s another shot later of the Millennium speeding through that same cloud, so I guess this will be a big sequence.

Early in the teaser we have an unknown person, presumably Han Solo, speaking to an Imperial recruiter. This is a longtime piece of Expanded Universe Han Solo backstory (him being a part of the Imperial military before going smuggler) that has survived the old canon purge. Nice.

Hey look it’s Chewbacca.

Hey look it’s Woody Harrelson.

Hey look it’s a singer wearing some kind of shape-shifting gold outfit.

My apologies for the lack of insight on these last three slides. We still don’t have a ton of context for all of this, but maybe tomorrow’s full trailer will shed some light. We’ll see!
