The 10 best freezing cold horror movies to check out before seeing The Lodge

In The Lodge (out Feb. 7), the attempt by Riley Keough’s character to bond with the two offspring of her boyfriend at a remote, snowbound location of the title goes disastrously awry. The film is another very original horror movie from the directors of 2014’s Goodnight Mommy — but there’s nothing new about setting a terror tale in a cold environment. Here are the ten best big screen chillers.

The Thing (1982)
“I know you gentlemen have been through a lot. But when you find the time… I’d rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS F—ING COUCH!”

A stone-cold classic from legendary director John Carpenter. Kurt Russell is the helicopter pilot battling an alien creature capable of taking on any form. Rob Bottin is the behind-the-scenes genius responsible for the movie’s jaw-dropping practical effects.

Frozen (2010)
Yes, the idea of a singing, overly cheerful snowman is terrifying. But we’re actually talking about the 2010 Frozen directed by Hatchet franchise overlord Adam Green. Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore, and Kevin Zegers play friends stranded on a ski lift at a resort which has closed for the week. Also: wolves!

Dead Snow (2009)
A group of students are picked off by Nazi zombies in the Norwegian countryside. It’s as bonkers as it sounds — and the sequel, 2014’s Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, is even more so.

30 Days of Night (2007)
The great thing about vampires is that they can’t trouble you during the day. But what if you lived in a place where night lasts a whole month? Josh Hartnett and Melissa George in this adaptation of Steve Niles’s fang-tastic graphic novel.

The Thing From Another World (1951)
James Arness portrays the monster in this earlier adaptation of John W. Campbell Jr.’s novella Who Goes There? If inevitably lacking the shocks of Carpenter’s later movie, producer Howard Hawks ensures that matters move along at a thrilling clip. And remember: “Keep watching the skies!”

Let the Right One In (2008)
Oskar is a 12-year-old Swedish boy whose new friend Eli is older than she looks — because she’s a freaking vampire!

The Shining (1980)
A roguish novelist is driven insane by the constant interruptions of his wife and young son — at least, that’s this writer’s take on Stanley Kubrick’s snowy adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.

Misery (1990)
What is it about Stephen King, writers, and snow? James Caan is romance novelist Paul Sheldon and Kathy Bates is his “carer” in Rob Reiner’s horror-thriller.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)
Emma Roberts and Kieran Shipka star in a slow-burn story from director Oz Perkins, whose latest movie Gretel & Hansel is released Jan. 31.

The Last Winter (2006)
Mother Nature gives some oil company employees a very cold shoulder in this Arctic-set film. Ron Perlman, Connie Britton, and James LeGros lead the cast in director Larry Fessenden’s eco-conscious horror fable.
