In order to create a perfectly dramatic finale, The Bachelor requires that a few secrets are kept tightly under wraps each year. This season’s final couple, Joey and Kelsey, have been together for months now, but only just became public following the conclusion of the show’s 28th installment.
Prior to this week, the two had to stay especially tight-lipped, but they found comfort in songs like Taylor Swift’s “Dress.” “‘Our secret moment in a crowded room/ They have no idea about me and you;’ that’s exactly how I feel whenever Joey and I make eye contact,” Kelsey says. “There’s all these other women here, but it just feels like us in that moment.”
“Whenever I missed Kelsey, I told one of the producers, ‘Play that song right now,'” Joey confirms. It became a secret code for the two while navigating the inevitable drama of dating on ABC.
Now engaged, Joey and Kelsey decided to round up some of their favorite albums that make them think of love, which mostly means albums that makes them think of each other.
“I’ve shown Joey a lot of music; I’m not sure he likes it all, but we overlap on pop and country,” shares Kelsey. Joey adds, “We do both like alternative and singer-songwriter style music, but country’s been huge for me as of late.”
Read through all the picks from the couple below, or listen to the full podcast chat above.
John Mayer — Continuum
Joey: John Mayer’s always been my favorite artist, from the beginning. It’s kind of cliche, but one of my favorite songs is “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.” It’s got parts of it that kind of sound sad, but I just love that song. There’s so many other ones — “Vultures,” “Gravity.” I just think that’s one of his best sounds because he also changes his music up, which I really do appreciate, but I think the sound that everyone fell in love with most was that album.
Taylor Swift — Lover
Kelsey: Joey posted his first post about us as a couple and used “Lover,” which is such a good song. I love Taylor Swift and we really connected on the show over the song “Dress,” which I know is on reputation, but I was listening to that song on the plane to Malta and it made me think of him; “secret moments in a crowded room.” We connected through Taylor.
Joey: No one wants to hear me belt the high note on “Lover,” but I try.
John Mayer — Room for Squares
Joey: This is my favorite John Mayer album; I’d put it over Continuum. My uncle was actually the one that introduced me to John Mayer. I remember I was pretty young, but he used to put that album on the car, the CD, and I listened to it a ton of times. There’s a lot of love songs on that album.
Daniel Caesar — Freudian
Kelsey: I love Daniel Caesar’s voice, and I feel like while you’re listening to it, you really feel like you’re falling in love. I have a playlist on my Spotify of all the songs that remind me of Joey, and there’s a lot of these songs on it.
Morgan Wallen — Dangerous: The Double Album
Joey: That was my Nashville stage — I think Morgan Wallen was the one that really got me into country music. He has that perfect blend, but that album alone, it’s about all the different like levels of love. There’s heartbreak in it, and he obviously has some actual love stories, too. It’s almost nostalgic for me with how I fell in love with country music.
Frank Ocean — Channel Orange
Kelsey: This is the Frank Ocean album that really got me obsessed with him. There’s so many great songs in here, and a lot of them make me think of mine and Joey’s love. “Thinking About You” is a classic.
John Legend — Get Lifted
Joey: John Legend just exudes love when he sings. And when I’m thinking through full albums, so much of it goes back to CDs. I listened to this one on repeat. “Get Lifted” and “Ordinary People” are the ones on top of my head. I don’t know how I couldn’t have put this one on the list.
Anees — summer camp
Kelsey: I sent Joey a lot of songs from that album. I love those songs. There’s “sun and moon,” that one’s really good. Joey put it up on his story after I sent it to him, which was a little nugget out there. So many people were like, “Okay, well, whatever is going on with Joey, he’s definitely happy.”
Joey: The other one you sent that I love too was “slip.”
Maroon 5 — Songs About Jane
Joey: This was one of my dad’s favorite albums. Adam Levine’s voice is so unique; I think that’s why I love Maroon 5 so much.
I met the lead guitarist, James Valentine, when I was teaching him tennis. I just straight up asked him, “Dude, why don’t you make more albums like Songs About Jane? Everyone loves that album.” And he said, “You don’t think we want to keep making songs like that?” He was awesome.
Jack Johnson — In Between Dreams
Kelsey: This album honestly reminds me of my childhood, and I associate it with falling in love because it makes me feel that giddy feeling when I listen to it. What it really reminds me of is driving in the car with my mom and dad and seeing their love together.
