Two adults died after a bus carrying New York students to a Pennsylvania band camp overturned

New York State Police said there were “multiple serious injuries” sustained in Thursday's crash on Interstate 84

At least one person is dead and over 40 others are injured following a rollover bus crash in New York state on Thursday, authorities said.

The bus was carrying students from Farmingdale High School in Nassau County who were on their way to a music event for band camp in Greeley, Pennsylvania, when it crashed on Interstate 84 in Wawayanda in Orange County around 1:20 p.m. local time, according to ABC affiliate WABC and CNN.

The bus came to a rest on its side in the middle of a wooded area between the eastbound and westbound sides of the highway, as seen in footage shared by FOX affiliate WNYW.

One adult was killed as a result of the crash, New York State Police said, per NBC affiliate WNBC.

There were “multiple serious injuries” sustained in the crash, the NYSP said in a news release.

Of the 46 people injured, a majority of them were young people, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said, WNBC reported. Five young people were transported to local hospitals in critical condition, he added.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those impacted by this accident,” Neuhas said in a post on his Facebook page.

The bus involved in Thursday’s crash was one of six buses transporting the band members to Pennsylvania, according to WNBC. It is unclear what caused the crash.

All after-school activities at Farmingdale High School were canceled Thursday following the crash, WNBC reported.

The westbound side of I-84 was closed at exit 15A while authorities investigated the incident, according to a news release from the NYSP.

A reunification center has been set up at the Diana Physical Education Building at Orange County Community College on East Conklin Avenue in Middletown, N.Y., WNBC reported.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was briefed on the incident and offered her support to those impacted by the tragic crash, according to CNN.

“We are grateful for the first responders whose speedy action saved lives and we will continue to support them however necessary,” the governor said. “Our hearts are with all who are impacted by this horrific situation.”

A press briefing about the incident is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time, according to the NYSP.
