It’s hard to predict the next big thing, but Lidewij Edelkoort of Trend Union does a pretty impressive job. The globally renowned trend forecaster’s annual trend books predict what concepts will be hot years in advance. Now that is ahead of the curve! Her work for clients such as Coca-Cola, Nissan, Camper, and Siemens has touched upon fashion, textiles, interiors, cars, cosmetics, retail, and food.

We decided to riff on some of her predictions for 2015 and see how her inspirations might play out in the DIY world.  Edelkoort’s assures us that comfort lies ahead!  We can relax? Yay!

It looks like 2015 will be a time of “embryonic renaissance” where we surround ourselves in a world where materials, objects, fashion, and design make us “feel happy and safe.”

1. Upcycling and Recycling

Is anything more cozy and “embryonic” then your favorite old couch, or a pair of jeans or a washed-to-shreds-sweaters? But what happens when they are too tattered to play their appropriate roles? This is where creative DIY up-cycling kicks in. Turn old jeans or sweaters into throw pillows. Throw old furniture together in a way that showcases your extreme creativity, like this suitcase chair below!.

2.  Rope…everything!

Hand made coil rope bowls and vessels, macrame wall hangings and hanging planters were big in 2014 and will be even bigger in 2015.

Gemma Patford’s rope vessel basket workshops sell out within hours of going on sale and we don’t see this trend slowing down anytime soon.  Baskets mean comfort and a place to store favorite things.  They bring a sense of warmth and hearth to any room, especially when made with something as tactile as a strand of rope.

Macrame planters like the one below from Molly Madfis are a simple way to bring the outdoors inside. There is a homeyness and simplicity of design and crafting we will be sure to see even more of in 2015.

3. Weaving on Homemade Looms and Basket Weave Patterns

Peek at Pinterest these days and you will see how home looming is taking off. Woven wall hangings on homemade looms are as cozy as it gets. They are like beautiful minisweaters for your walls. Awww.

5. Abstract Patterns

This trend is particularly exciting, because abstract is another word for “acceptable messiness” in our book. One less thing to be uptight about!

6. Knitting and Yarn Get Even Bigger

Break out the needles and get ready to knit one, pearl two, three and four, because yarns and knits are not going anywhere.

If there is a yummier coming together of yarn than this giant loopy concoction of sweater yumminess…then call me a cold-hearted fool. Because. This. Is. It.

In 2014, we saw more blue hands from all the Indio dyeing than you’d see in the Smurf movie. In 2015 we predict multicolored fingers from dyeing our own yarns every color imaginable (though shades of green are predicted to be particularly hot).

We may have had our fill of ombre in 2014, but when it comes to yarn, can this ever go out of style? This is what the fun of predicting is all about. Will it or won’t it?
