Hot Trend on the Cheap: DIY Wallpaper

Wallpaper has made a big-time comeback in the last few years—one that is certainly going to stick around (no pun intended) for quite a while.

If the endless pattern options or the messy installation seem daunting to you, try tackling one of these DIY gems that will not only make your walls talk, but it will let them sing!

1. Abstract Expression

While this is an actual product from the Etsy store, Anewall, I feel as though it could be DIY’ed pretty easily. A big sheet of porous paper, a lot of water, and some watercolor paint in a tube? Sounds about right. (I’ll let you know how mine comes out!)

2. Stamp It Out

Stamps are not just for card-making or kids’ crafts. You can turn almost anything into a stamp with a few easy tricks. I love the graphic quality of these red triangles that were paint stamped on the wall. If it were me, I’d take one of my son’s wood blocks, cover it with craft foam, and make it into a big stamp.

3. Insta-Awesome

This impressive photo-wallpaper was made with color copies of actual instant photos. Even though it looks like thousands of different pictures, they actually do repeat. This would be super-cool to do with your fave instagram pics!

4. Sticky Situation

Washi tape, the darling of the craft world these days, is a fun material to use on walls. It comes in different widths so you can actually create a high-impact striped wall with very little effort. Bonus: it’s a great temporary solution for all the renters out there, tired of dull and dingy white walls!

5. All Mapped Out

Printed maps are quickly becoming extinct with all of the GPS apps that we use on smartphones. Here’s a great way to use the ones you’ve collected from your travels.

6. Connect the Dots

The best part about this polka dot wall design, is that it requires no precision whatsoever. You can even let your 6-year-old help! You can find the best variety of permanent adhesive circle stickers here.

7. The Handwriting’s on the Wall

The idea of just taking a black Sharpie to crisp, white walls is so appealing. I love the thought of customizing the text to the purpose of the room—like these motivational sayings written on this office wall.

8. Draw the Line

Speaking of Sharpies, this elegant gold wall pattern was in fact done with a Sharpie. And a ruler. And a very steady hand.

9. In the Clouds

These dreamy stenciled-wall clouds would look great even if they weren’t lined up so perfectly. (Adorable room was painted by Mer Mag.)
