Willie Nelson Reveals How He Handled Childhood Bullies

Even country outlaws like Willie Nelson have had to overcome being bullied. The country music legend recently opened up to Great Big Story about his childhood experiences growing up in a small Texas town in the 1930s.

Willie was targeted by bullies for his pesky habit of … picking his nose. Apparently, he used to dig so hard, his nose would bleed. But luckily, the now 83-year-old singer says he was able to rise above the teasing with the help of a poem his grandmother taught him when he was 6.

“What are you looking at me for?” the poem began. “I ain’t got nothing to say. If you don’t like the looks of me, you can just look the other way.” Willie explained that he thought the poem was so funny, he just “started living that way.” And he still lives by that motto today.
