Viola Davis Becomes First Black Actress to Win 5 SAG Awards
Viola Davis continues to be a trailblazer.
The star scored her fifth Screen Actors Guild Award at Sunday’s show, winning in the best supporting actress in a motion picture category for her role in the Denzel Washington-directed film Fences.
Davis, 51, won the award over Midnight‘s Naomie Harris, Lion‘s Nicole Kidman, Hidden Figures‘ Octavia Spencer and Manchester by the Sea‘s Michelle Williams. (Three weeks ago, she won the Golden Globe in the same category against the same four actresses.)
With her latest win, Davis became the first African-American actress and the first woman of color to nab five Actor statuettes.

The mother of one also recently made history as the first African American actress to score three Academy Award nominations.
In Fences, based on August Wilson’s Pulitzer-winning play, Davis is revisiting the part that won her a Tony in 2010, and portrays the ultimate put-upon wife, Rose, who has abdicated her own future.

Davis has garnered a total of eight SAG nominations and previously won the dramatic series best actress award in 2015 and 2016 for How to Get Away with Murder, and the lead actress award and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for 2012’s The Help.
Julianna Marguiles holds the record for most SAG wins by a female actor, with eight trophies.
