The last time we checked in with Joe Dante’s redoubtable movie website Trailers From Hell, Candyman director Bernard Rose was extolling the strange virtues of the 1982 fantasy epic, The Dark Crystal. Now, in the latest video from TFH Towers, another horror-loving filmmaker, XX co-director Karyn Kusama, tackles another very weird kids movie, the 1976 gangster-musical Bugsy Malone, whose cast was actually made up of children.
“I was eight years old when I first saw this film,” recalls Kusama. “I have a very strong sense of how strange the experience was, of watching children play in a sort of gangster epic, and to see that Jodie Foster was playing this sort of gun moll tough-girl and Scott Baio was playing the hero, though his voice hadn’t begun to break, so there was a funny disconnect between her toughness and his little boy voice.”
