Toni Braxton: ‘I Had to Forgive Myself for the Abortion’

Toni Braxton isn’t holding back. The seven-time Grammy winner sat down with The Insider With Yahoo to talk about the Lifetime movie she produced about her own life, Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart, airing Jan. 23, and got candid about the toughest moments of her life starting with her shocking bankruptcy filings in 1996 and 2010.

“It is never my goal to ever have another bankruptcy in my life,” she explained. “I am here today because I was allowed to file bankruptcy, so that is good.”

When asked what the hardest chapter of her life has been so far, the 48-year-old singer said the ramifications of her divorce from Keri Lewis in 2013 challenged her most. “You would think it was the bankruptcy or something like that, but it was … getting a divorce. My kids, my family … that was the hardest part.”

Braxton also opened up about learning to forgive herself for the abortion that she admitted to having in her 2014 memoir Unbreak My Heart. “I had to forgive myself for the abortion,” she said. “It just stunned me and it almost corrupt my energy and made [me] sad way too long.”

Toni has two children with Lewis, Denim, 14, and Diezel, 12, who was diagnosed with autism at age 3. “He’s pretty much off the spectrum. I tell people early diagnosis is everything,” she said. “We’ve been working really hard. That kid has been doing everything.” Diezel even has hopes to follow in his mom’s famous footsteps. “He wants to act like Denzel Washington,” she shared. “He loves Denzel and Samuel L. Jackson.”
