Why Tom Ford Won’t Dress Melania Trump: ‘She’s Not Necessarily My Image’

Iconic fashion designer and director Tom Ford appeared on ABC’s The View on Wednesday to discuss his new film, Nocturnal Animals, starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal.

When pressed on whether he would consider dressing soon-to-be First Lady Melania Trump, Ford revealed that he was asked to dress her many years ago and declined, explaining, “She’s not necessarily my image.” He also admitted that although he voted for Hillary Clinton, he would decline to dress her as well.

With the average Tom Ford dress retailing in the $5,000 range, Ford explained that his clothes are “too expensive” and the first lady should wear clothes that the American people can relate to. Ford did, however, dress Michelle Obama back in 2011 for a dinner at Buckingham Palace. He felt that the exception was warranted: “It was an honor to dress her.”
