Actor T.R. Knight has spent the last week appreciating the beauty of the great outdoors and Americana at its finest as he heads out West on a cross-country trip, presumably with his social-media-eschewing husband, Patrick Leahy. But somewhere between the Rocky Mountains and the Grand Canyon, they encountered an obviously uncared-for dog dangerously roaming a highway. Not only did they get the malnourished and flea-and-tick-riddled guy to an animal hospital — they decided to adopt him!

“We were on our way to the Grand Canyon yesterday, when we saw a little dog darting back and forth on the busy freeway. He was emaciated with his ribs and hip bones poking through, covered in ticks and fleas,” the 43-year-old wrote on Instagram. “We took him to @canyonpethospital and met our heroes Michelle, Jessica, Katie, Kristen and Dr. Amstutz. They spent over 2 hours removing hundreds of ticks from this brave little guy. The Grand Canyon will have to wait, as we welcome our newest family member. Meet Traveler, a sweetheart (even when he is pooping all over me in the pet store). Another adventure begins!”

The new pooch, now named Traveler, joins Knight’s three other dogs: Arrow, Laidan, and Dingan.

Last night in Colorado (which has bowled me over with its beauty)!

Until Traveler’s arrival, the trip had been all about the beauty of nature.

And of course, unexpectedly seeing the University of Michigan’s solar car, Aurum.

On our road trip out West and just saw Aurum the Solar Car in Missouri! I’m freakin’ out!!

But we’re sure the new addition to Knight and his hubby’s family will only enhance the rest of their majestic trip.
