Stars Who Had the Chance to Rub Elbows With Former First Lady Nancy Reagan

Former first lady Nancy Reagan died on Sunday at her home in Bel-Air, Calif., at the age of 94. She will be remembered for her involvement in the “Just Say No” drug abuse prevention campaign, being a fierce protector of her husband, former President Ronald Reagan, and her work as a leading activist for Alzheimer’s research. She was also admired for her elegance and impeccable style.

Reagan, who started out as an actress and appeared in 11 films from 1949 until 1956, brought a touch of old Hollywood glamour to the White House, which the public appeared to embrace until the country was hit by a recession. “Queen Nancy” — as she had been dubbed — was criticized for her frivolous spending. She redecorated the White House, wore expensive designer gowns, and hosted lavish soirees for her and the president’s well-to-do friends at a time when most Americans were struggling. In an attempt to deflect the negative press, she surprised everyone when she dressed as a bag lady and sang “Secondhand Clothes” (to the tune of “Secondhand Rose”) at the Gridiron Dinner in 1982. She absolutely stole the show with her self-deprecating song-and-dance number, which won over critics and transformed her image. Of course, she still was pretty good at throwing parties.

Check out some of the celebs who were lucky enough to meet the charismatic Nancy Reagan during her time as not only first lady of the United States but first lady of California.
