Man Returns His Wife's Woman of the Year Award Because He's Upset About Caitlyn Jenner

In a public letter addressed to Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive, James Smith announced he’s returning his wife’s posthumous Woman of the Year award in protest of Caitlyn Jenner’s inclusion on the list this year.

“I was shocked and saddened to learn that Glamour has just named Bruce Jenner ‘Woman of the Year,’” Smith wrote on Facebook. “I find it insulting to Moira Smith’s memory, and the memory of other heroic women who have earned this award. Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man?”

NYPD officer Moira Smith died on 9/11 after escorting hundreds of people out of the burning World Trade Center to safety. When the South Tower collapsed, she was buried in the ruble. Just one month after her death, Smith was honored as one of Glamour’s Women of the Year.

Caitlyn Jenner, perhaps the most visible transwoman in history, was honored with the same award this year, alongside Reese Witherspoon, Victoria Beckham, and Misty Copeland.

“We were proud to honor his wife . . . in 2001, and we stand by our decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner,” a Glamour spokeswoman told the New York Post in response to Smith’s letter. “Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards recognize women with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.”

This is not the first time someone has taken issue with Caitlyn Jenner winning an award. In June, Boston radio personality Gerry Callahan sparked a meme when he tweeted that army veteran Noah Galloway should have won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award over Jenner.

“The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is meant to honor individuals whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action. Sometimes that courage is demonstrated over the course of a lifetime and sometimes it is demonstrated in a single act that shines a light on an important contemporary issue,” ESPN said in a statement at the time. “At all times, there are many worthy candidates. This year, we are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way to help move forward a constructive dialogue about progress and acceptance.”
