Robert De Niro says Trump is going to 'sink himself'

Actor Robert De Niro has been one of President Donald Trump’s most vocal celebrity critics, even dating back to the campaign days. So in a recent interview with Deadline about his Emmy-nominated turn as Bernie Madoff in HBO’s The Wizard of Lies, De Niro couldn’t help but connect things back to the president.

“If he was smart, he’d be even more dangerous. He’s dangerous as it is,” De Niro said. “He’s terrible, and a flat-out blatant racist and doubling down on that, and it’s good that he does because he’s going to sink himself.”

De Niro also emphasized that this year’s Emmys ceremony should not be afraid to criticize the president. Award shows have become something of a flashpoint in the Trump era, with De Niro’s contemporary Meryl Streep using her Cecil B. De Mille Award acceptance speech at January’s Golden Globes to slam the president (and earning herself an angry Trump tweetstorm in response).

“Even at the Emmys it should be a kind of theme in some way — however, you know, balanced it could be so we’re not making it all about that,” De Niro said. “But at this point, we’re at a crisis in this country with this fool, who never should have gotten into the position that he’s in.”
