No matter how many roles he played during his career as a stage and TV actor, Conrad Bain will forever be remembered as Phillip Drummond on “Diff’rent Strokes.” The Canadian-born actor, whose wealthy businessman character was the wise and lovable father of daughter Kimberly and adopted sons Arnold and Willis on the ’70s and ’80s sitcom, died of natural causes at a hospital in Livermore, California, on January 14. He was 89. In an interview with the New York Times, his daughter Jennifer Bain said her dad was loving, warm, and politically liberal – but otherwise very different than Mr. Drummond. “My father was far more interesting than that character,” she said. “We were a very intellectual, artsy family.”
