Hillary Clinton

No one else on Earth has been First Lady, U.S. Senator, presidential candidate, and Secretary of State in one lifetime, But before all that, Hillary Clinton was something else unusual for the wife of a soon-to-be president: an independent, successful career woman. But not everyone liked it when, during a March 1992 broadcast interview recorded by multiple press outlets, Clinton talked a bit about her life decisions, career and otherwise, saying at one point: “I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession, which I entered before my husband was in public life." It was, of course, that single snippet that was played over and over, creating backlash from many who thought her comments were insensitive to women who didn’t work outside the home. When, during a "Today" show interview a few weeks later, Katie Couric told Clinton it sounded like a put-down, Clinton explained: "I wish what I'd said before and said after had all been part of the sound bite but I’m learning that that's not always what you could expect."
