A cocktail for every Best Picture nominee at the Oscars

Oscars 2017: A cocktail for every Best Picture nominee

Just because there’s no open bar at the Dolby Theatre doesn’t mean you can’t toast throughout the 2017 Academy Awards this weekend.

And since the awards show is one of the fanciest events of the year, it would only make sense that the aforementioned toasting have some fancy touches as well. Below, you’ll find fun Oscars cocktail recipes inspired by each of the nine Best Picture nominees.

Arrival

You’d need to get up pretty early in the morning to stump Amy Adams’ Louise Banks, who attempts to communicate with aliens in this sci-fi film, so this drink has a bit of a breakfast-friendly vibe.

SVEDKA’s Early Arrival (photo above)
2 parts SVEDKA Orange Cream Pop
1 part heavy cream (or milk)
Splash orange juice
Instructions: Pour SVEDKA Orange Cream Pop and cream into a shaker filled with ice. Add a splash of juice. Shake vigorously. Pour into a rocks glass. Top with orange zest.

Fences

This film stars Best Actor and Supporting Actress nominees Denzel Washington and Viola Davis — two stars who work great together — and this cocktail includes several equally successful pairings. (Maple syrup and bitters?! Orange and cinnamon?!)

On the Fence
2 parts Hornitos® Black Barrel® Tequila
1/4 part maple syrup
4 dashes Angostura® bitters
Orange peel
Cinnamon stick
Instructions: Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and stir. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange peel and a cinnamon stick.

Hacksaw Ridge

The movie is about the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, so we’re honoring the conscientious non-drinker at your bash for this one.

Water
Instructions: Open bottle and pour OR turn on faucet and fill.

Hell or High Water

A neo-Western deserves a drink that’ll offer a sour kick in the boots.

Hell or Highball
2 parts Hornitos® Plata Tequila
1 part fresh lime juice
3/4 part ginger sage syrup
2 dashes Angostura® bitters
Top with grapefruit beer (appx. 1 part)
Grapefruit
Sage sprigs
Instructions: Combine equal parts sugar and water with 1 ginger slice and 4 sage sprigs and bring to a boil to create ginger sage syrup. Allow the mixture to cool, combine all ingredients except grapefruit beer in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain the mixture into a highball glass filled with ice and top with grapefruit beer. Garnish with a grilled grapefruit slice.

Hidden Figures

This treat was created by The Roof in Manhattan, and they shared their inspiration: “The women depicted in this film were hidden because of the color of their skin until their intelligence and skill made it so they could no longer be hidden. Similar to this cocktail, where the alcohol is hidden until it catches up to you.”

No Longer Hidden Figures
1 oz Casamigos Blanco
1 oz Demerara
3 lemon slices
Instructions: Muddle lemon in mixer, build cocktail on top, add ice, shake and pour into rocks glass. Garnish with a brown sugar rim.

La La Land

This concoction, created by the Loews Hollywood hotel (and served there and at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel), is so pretty, it practically floats… kind of like Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) in the film.

City of Stars
.5 oz lavender syrup
1.5 oz Botanist gin
.5 oz lemon juice
Top off with Prosecco in flute glass
Garnish with orchid

Lion

Created by Sarah Berman of Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar in Upper Marietta, Georgia, this flavor journey was inspired by that of Saroo’s in the film.

Lion’s Roar
1.5 oz. Templeton Rye
.5 oz. Punt e Mes
.5 oz. Cointreau
.25 oz. Fernet-Branca
Instructions: Stir and pour into a coupe glass, garnish with orange peel and clothes pin.

Manchester by the Sea

The Roof refers to this mixture as a classic blood and sand cocktail, inspired by the beaches and families of the film.

The Manchester
1oz Macallan 12
1oz Dolin Rouge
1oz Cherry Herring
1oz Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
Instructions: Build in mixer, add ice, shake, pour into rocks glass.

Moonlight

This twist on an espresso martini is inspired by Little’s “journey from child to adult where he gets awakened from different moments that occur throughout his life. The color of the cocktail is that of a night’s sky and it’s definitely a ‘pick me up’ cocktail because of the espresso.”

The Night’s Sky
2oz Absolute Elyx
1.5oz Espresso
.75oz Vanilla Syrup
.75oz Borgetti
Instructions: Build in a mixer, add ice, and shake. Strain into coupe glass.

And the Winner Is…

One last treat for you. Cheers!

The Winner
2 oz. Casamigos Añejo Tequila
.25 oz. Agave Nectar
2 dashes Orange Bitters
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Instructions: Combine all ingredients into a glass mixer. Add ice. Stir quickly for 30-40 seconds. Strain into rocks glass. Add 1 large ice cube. Garnish with an orange peel wrapped around a Luxardo cherry on a skewer.

The Academy Awards telecast begins at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
