One Police Officer Killed, Another Injured in San Diego Traffic Stop as Suspect Detained

A San Diego police officer was killed Thursday night and a second was wounded when a motorist they had stopped allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire on them, PEOPLE confirms.

The name of the deceased officer has not been released. Neither has the name of the injured officer, who has undergone emergency surgery and is expected to survive, according to a police spokesman.

The suspect, identified only as a male, has been detained. Authorities allege he acted alone.

An intensive manhunt followed Thursday night's shooting, with SWAT teams called in and helicopters searching from above.

According to police, both officers were allegedly shot after stopping a vehicle and immediately called for backup. The officer who died sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

San Diego's shooting comes at the end of a tumultuous month for law enforcement nationwide.
