Now Creepy Clowns Are Threatening School Districts

Creepy clowns are out of control. An Ohio school district closed on Friday after scary clowns made threats against the schools. Another school district in Tampa was put on alert after police received multiple calls reporting creepy clowns. Sightings of clowns has become increasingly common after children reported clowns trying to lure them into the woods in late August.

But these sightings have escalated from creepily staring at homes and apartments from the woods to actual attacks and threats. At least a dozen people have been arrested in connection with clown sightings, according to International Business Times.

One woman in Reading, Ohio, said that a man in a white mask and red wig grabbed her while she was smoking on her porch in the early morning. He held her by the throat and said, “[I] should just kill you now” and threatened local schools, saying “some students and teachers would wish they were never born at the junior and senior high school today.” Local schools cancelled class on Friday and police have not located the suspect.

On Thursday night, Colerain Township Police arrested a suspect who made threats toward the local high school and charged him with making terrorist threats and inducing panic-both felony charges.

Pasco County Schools in Florida were also on alert Friday after receiving a threat on social media.

According to Rolling Stone, clown sightings have become commonplace every year before Halloween since the early 1980s, likely inspired by serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who worked as Pogo the Clown at children’s parties. He was captured in 1979. The film adaptation of Stephen King’s It, released in 1986, only increased the fervor.

But honestly, with a month to go until Halloween, I think we’ve had enough creepy clown sightings to last us at least until the 31st. Let’s stop clowning around.
