While some folks use Instagram to announce their pregnancy or share behind-the-scene photos of a wild birthday bash, Donald Robertson &mdash otherwise known as @donalddrawbertson &mdashuses the social media platform to showcase his quirky, colorful artwork of lips, Anna Wintour, Beyonce and Pharrell.
"I love my Pharrell [Williams], Beyonce, Kanye [West] &mdash so all my music people help me decide what I’m going to draw," the bespectacled and upbeat artist told Pret-a-Reporter at Violet Grey's "Artist in Residence" party Wednesday night at Cassandra Huystentruyt Grey's beauty flagship store on Melrose Place. "And then, when they share my drawings, that’s the best."
Among one of Hollywood's boldfacers who recently shared one of his pieces was Kim Kardashian, who posted his drawing on her Insta before meeting him for the first time at the intimate soiree. "So when Kim Kardashian posted my picture today, that was the best. It’s the first time we’ve met but Cassandra had sent her the photo I painted of her and she posted it today. It nearly broke my phone," he said jokingly, referring to the amount of attention he received on his Instagram from the reality star's 17 million followers. "Like, my phone started flipping out. Kim owes me a new phone."
Kardashian, who showed up for the evening's festivities in a bosom-baring Yiqing Yin jumpsuit, arrived with singer Carole Bayer Sager and mingled with the evening's guests including Grey, January Jones, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin. Carrie Brownstein and Bob Saget also attended the event, sipping on a glass of bubbly, while other attendees admired Robertson's Hollywood-inspired beauty art pieces (think paintings of Edith Head and red puckered lips), alongside the boutique's offerings of Tom Ford lipsticks and NARS foundation.
In addition to being an artist, Robertson has a day job as head of creative development at Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. But that's not all. He's also a husband and father to five, in which he shares that his kids help him find inspiration with his work.
"Yeah, so basically, I literally steal all my ideas from my kids," reveals Robertson. "I have five kids &mdash they range from 18 to newborn. Kids are what keep you young. My daughter and son are obsessed with Asher Roth so when Billboard recently contacted me to do a feature, I painted a picture of Asher Roth. I’m like, &lsquokids, who should I paint?'"
Best of all, showcasing his art on Instagram has led him to some major collaborations, including the pop-up gallery at Violet Grey.
He noted: "I really think I’ve managed to find all the nice people in fashion to work with."
