Bullies beware! Selena Gomez put an Instagram hater on blast over the weekend for posting a mean comment to one of the pop star's photos. The user, whose account has since been deactivated, reportedly wrote that the Wizards of Waverly Place alum should "burn in hell with cancer" -- a remark that did not sit well with Gomez.
In response to the commenter, the 21-year-old Spring Breakers actress left her own message on one of the user's photos, which she then captured in a screenshot and shared with her 10.8 million followers on Saturday, July 12.
"The comment you left about cancer was absurd. How distasteful of a young woman," Gomez wrote. "I have gone through that battle with fans and family members. You can dislike someone but to wish something that could happen to you or your family is uncalled for sweetheart."
"You won't be winning 'anyone's' heart that way," she continued. "Trust me. Educate yourself a tad more. God bless love. Be an amazing woman. You're beautiful."
Alongside the picture of the comment, she added this: "Honestly, I don't speak up much because it's simply *always* taken out of context. But I don't take bullying well. I have seen too much to not say anything."
Some fans applauded the "Come & Get It" singer's hard stance on bullying. But others thought she crossed a line, and accused her of being a hypocrite and publicly humiliating the girl in front of millions of people. As of Monday, the post had nearly 34,000 comments.
Gomez has spoken before about bullying. At the We Day California youth conference back in March, Justin Bieber's on-and-off love encouraged the crowd to "have each others' backs." Recalling some harsh criticism early on in her career, she said, "It does more than knock the wind out of you. It crushes you when people try to tell you you're not good enough."
She went on to say, "Please just be kind to each other and love and inspire people...Let's change the game. The most important thing is that we learn and we continue to learn from each other."
