Reese speaks her piece. Shortly after news broke that Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth were arrested and booked Friday, April 19 in Atlanta -- Toth for suspected DUI, Witherspoon for disorderly conduct -- the Oscar-winning actress released an apologetic statement about the shocking incident.
"Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," Witherspoon, 37, told Us Weekly in a late Sunday statement. Married for two years, the actress and CAA agent, 41, were arrested and briefly jailed after a policeman pulled them over for erratic driving, with an agitated Witherspoon arguing with the officer as Toth (the driver) took a sobriety test.
The star continued in her statement: "It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The
words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."
According to the arresting officer's report from April 19, Witherspoon ignored his orders to remain in the vehicle during Toth's sobriety test, and argued angrily, "Do you know my name? . . . You're about to find out who I am."
The officer added in the report (first obtained by Variety) that the Legally Blonde actress "stated that she was a 'US citizen' and that she was allowed to 'stand on American ground.'"
"Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, 'You are going to be on national news.''" the officer's report continued. "I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine."
After being booked at a nearby police station, the Hollywood couple was released around 3:30 a.m. Despite the drama, Witherspoon kept to her professional commitment on Sunday, attending the NYC premiere of Mud in NYC, where she wore a short black sheath, flashed a tiny smile and posed with costar Matthew McConaughey on the red carpet.
A court date is scheduled for Monday, April 22, although it may be rescheduled, according to reports.
