Memorable performances by some of today's biggest stars -- including Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake -- gave way to one hell of a night at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 25. Check out the highlights from the show in the round-up below.
So, that happened. The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards are just getting started, but the party at Brooklyn's Barclays Center is already well under way, thanks in part to Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke's insane, raunchy rendition of "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines." Taking the stage amid a bunch of giant teddy bears -- an homage to the music video for "We Can't Stop," in which she dances suggestively with huge stuffed animals -- the 20-year-old singer began the performance in a skimpy leotard adorned with the face of a bear.
Lady Gaga opened up the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards -- her first live performance of new single "Applause" and her return to the stage since hip surgery earlier this year -- in bizarre, creepy fashion. Inside Brooklyn's Barclays Center, before launching into her comeback single, the pop provocateur, 27, began with an a cappella operatic performance with her famous face encased in a white cube.
Squeal! It was early 2000 again for a brief, shining moment onstage at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 25 -- when, as expected, Justin Timberlake reunited with 'N Sync bandmates JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass for a spirited rendition of "Bye, Bye, Bye."
Taylor Swift is up to her old tricks again. The 23-year-old pop star -- known for writing those infamous breakup tunes -- dissed One Direction's Harry Styles, this time at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. When Styles and his One Direction bandmates presented an award onstage, Swift (sitting with BFF Selena Gomez) was filmed mouthing "shut the f--- up!" in the audience.
Katy Perry's first performance of "Roar" was a knockout! The 27-year-old pop superstar closed out the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City with a big, showstopping rendition of her hit single -- and the crowd, well, roared. With the city's iconic Brooklyn Bridge towering behind her, Perry took the stage -- made to look like a boxing ring -- in a tiger-print sports bra and silk boxing shorts. She then proceeded to sing "Roar," the debut single off her upcoming third album Prism, while dancing all over the set.
