The Mindy Project: Mindy Kaling reveals final season details

Marriage ain’t what it’s cracked up to be … that’s what Mindy Kaling will explore in the final season of her eponymous show that returns Sept. 12 to Hulu.

After marrying her nurse boyfriend Ben (Bryan Greenberg) last season, Kaling’s alter-ego on the comedy will face the “reality of marriage, what has lived up to expectations and what hasn’t.”

“This character was obsessed about marriage,” she reminded reporters at the annual Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday. “And frankly, she gets disillusioned with it over the season.”

“The beginning of the season shows the repercussions of that,” added Executive Producer Matt Warburton. “She’s in this unexpected place that didn’t turn out like she thought. How do you balance your dreams with many things that surprised you, that you never thought would happen?”

Kaling and Warburton also promised the return of fan favorites like Jay Duplass (Duncan), Mark Duplass (Brendan), Chris Messina (Danny), Adam Pally (Peter Prentice), and Glenn Howerton (Cliff), as well as a guest starring role by Julie Bowen who mommy-shames Mindy. And all the series regulars will have episodes dedicated to them.

“That was fun for us,” said Kaling.

As for the finale, don’t expect Kaling or Warburton to keep their options open for a spin-off or a reboot of the show that first launched on Fox in 2012. “The decision to end was ours,” said Kaling. “We have such a good finale we’ve known about it for a while.”

“We are trying to leave the audience … by showing she had some growth,” Kaling said.
