Miley Cyrus Has 'Never Really Been a Fan' of Mariah Carey

Authenticity is what’s most important these days to Miley Cyrus, and that’s why the new Voice coach has never been one of Mariah Carey’s little lambs.

“I’ve never really been a fan, because it’s so much about Mariah Carey,” Cyrus tells Elle in its October cover story. “That’s part of her shtick.”

The “Wrecking Ball” singer, 23, claims she “can see right through” Carey’s persona. “That’s part of what makes her a gay icon,” continues Cyrus. “Like, it’s about Mimi! It’s about what she’s wearing, and it’s about her.”

Cyrus insists her art “isn’t about me” and is rather about sharing her story. “It’s about someone being connected to what I’m saying,” adds the star.

Now a mentor on NBC’s hit singing competition show, the singer is also urging her contestants to remain genuine – and going above and beyond to help their careers.

“I want to help these singers,” says Cyrus. “[A producer says to me], ‘Shut the f— up! You’re at 20 minutes!’ I’m like, what are you going to do – kick out these two 16-year-olds from Arkansas when they’re still pitchy? If I’m here, I’m going to do it for real. I’m not acting; I’m not playing me.”
