Miami Marlins Hold Emotional Tribute for José Fernández Before Game Against New York Mets

Tears and heartbreak didn't stop the Miami Marlins from winning their game against the New York Mets on Monday night, and it only added to the emotion they felt during their tribute to deceased pitcher José Fernández.

The team and fans remembered the 24-year-old, who tragically died in a boating accident early Sunday morning, as a video of Fernández played throughout the ballpark to a trumpet version of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

Every Marlins player wore Fernández's No. 16 jersey. After their win against the Mets, the team gathered around on the mound and laid their hats on it in his honor, as the crowd began to chant Fernández's name.

Dee Gordon, a second baseman for the Marlins, hit a home run for his fallen teammate during Monday's game, and told FOX Sports Florida's Craig Minervini it was the best moment of his life.

"I don't have kids, so hitting a HR for José Fernández is the best moment of my life," he said.

In a press conference on Sunday, Marlins manager Don Mattingly choked back tears as he spoke about Fernández's death.

"When I think about José, I'll be thinking about that little kid," he said. "When I think of José, I see such a little boy, the way he played. There's just joy with him when he played, and when he pitched. And I think that's what the guys will say, too."
