Mark Hamill Didn’t Know About Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher’s Star Wars Affair

Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford may have had an “intense” love affair on the set of the 1977 Star Wars film, but their costar Mark Hamill was none-the-wiser.

The 65-year-old actor, who played Fisher’s brother in the iconic sci-fi franchise, says he should have seen it coming. He revealed that he once had a short-lived romance with a costar himself – Anne Wyndham, an actress who played his sister while they were on General Hospital in the early ’70s.

But as Hamill told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday while attending the launch of the Comic Con HQ network at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, he was “blissfully unaware” of the Fisher/Ford fling.

“I was so self-involved at that point, they could’ve been doing it in front of me and I wouldn’t have noticed,” he joked. “I was single and had my own agenda.”

“I think it might have been a distraction if I’d known what was going on,” Hamill added.

Hamill says if he did know about their affair, he might have advised them to stop. While he admitted that on-set romances are “commonplace,” Hamill said they can be “tricky” to navigate – especially if the love affair ends.

“If the relationship doesn’t last and you’re on a TV series and you got four more seasons to go, it can be really awkward,” he said.

Hamill may have learned that from experience, but he didn’t make a habit of it. The actor married his dental hygienist-wife Marilou in 1978. They have three children together: Nathan, 37, Griffin, 33, and Chelsea Elizabeth, 28.

Fisher revealed news of her whirlwind romance in her memoir, The Princess Diarist — released Nov. 22.

“It’s been 40 years!the 60-year-old actress turned author told PEOPLE about spilling the secret of the real-life love between Han Solo and Princess Leia. “I didn’t say anything to anybody for years but it’s not like anyone’s deeply affected by it anymore.”

After stumbling upon her old, often angst-ridden journals that she kept while filming on location in London, Fisher felt the time had come to open up about the formative experience.

“It was so intense,” she told PEOPLE. “It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.”

Although their unlikely romance took Fisher by complete surprise and ran its course once the film wrapped, she remembers the time fondly. “I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him,” she explained. “He was kind.”

Hamill, Ford and Harrison reunited for 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Hamill is also set to star in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 8.

In the meantime, he’s hosting a new online series on Comic Con HQ, titled Mark Hamill’s Pop Culture Quest — where he travels the country connecting with other pop culture enthusiasts.

“There’s a certain shared passion that we have,” he told ET of meeting with different collectors and hobbyists. “It’s universal. It doesn’t matter if I don’t collect a specific item that you collect. We have the same motivation in terms of collecting.”
