Mariah Carey Didn’t Want to Sing for James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke

Mariah Carey was the first to participate in James Corden’s recurring Late Late Show segment, Carpool Karaoke. But she was by no means an easy guest.

During an interview with Howard Stern on Monday, Corden opened up about his initial struggles to book a guest for what has become an incredibly popular bit. The late-night host said he spent two months getting rejected by everyone he called and it was only through a chance meeting with a woman from Carey’s record company that he managed to book her. But when it came time to shoot the very first Carpool Karaoke segment, the diva declared, “Oh, I’m not singing today. We’ll just drive around and have a chat.”

At that point, the only thing the British comedian could do was just go for it.

“Even if this bit is just me singing to Mariah Carey, it’s still on the show,” he said. “It may not be the recurring bit that we hope it is, but it’s still probably on the show."

Luckily, his enthusiasm proved to be contagious and Carey eventually sang along to a few of her hits as they tooled around the streets of L.A.
