Maluma Becomes First Latino Artist to Reach 10 Million Followers on Instagram: Here’s a Primer for the Uninitiated

Colombian reggaeton artist Maluma has made history, becoming the first male Latino star to reach 10 million followers on Instagram. If you need any further reason besides the handsome photo above to help him get to 11 million, then we don’t know how to help you. But if you’d like to know more about the 22-year-old star, we can do just that.

Maluma, born Juan Luis Londoño Arias, in Medellín, Colombia, gets his stage name from the names of his family members: his mother Marlli (Ma), his father Luis (Lu), and his sister Manuela (Ma). He was signed to a record deal at 16, after a song he’d recorded, “Farandulera,” became a local radio hit.

He’s since released two albums and the video for his new song “Desde Esa Noche” will premiere next Friday.

To celebrate his milestone, Maluma uploaded a series of videos on Instagram featuring his fans, thanking them for their support.
