Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock Talks New Album, Exes and Maybe Collaborating with Fifth Harmony
Little Mix is putting their exes on blast — and having a blast doing it.
The U.K. girl group’s new album, Glory Days, is just two weeks from release and single “Shout Out to My Ex” is topping the charts across-the-pond.
With lyrics like, “You made my heart break and that made me who I am / Here’s to my ex, hey, look at me now,” the upbeat track and accompanying music video is relatable. According to Leigh-Anne Pinnock, that was exactly the point.
“I think we went through a lot in the last year,” the 25-year-old tells PEOPLE. “We’ve all been through a breakup. We basically just wanted to write a song that relates to the whole world… Everybody’s been through it and it’s uplifting as well.”
The track has people talking — including fellow girl group Fifth Harmony, who, like Little Mix, was formed on The X Factor. Recently, Ally Brooke dubbed the Brits, “Fabulous.”
Pinnock was quick to shut down any rumors of rivalry between the bands. “Oh my God, no. Not at all,” she says. “We’re so supportive of them. We think they’re amazing and every time their song comes on in the club we love getting down to them.”
In fact, Pinnock says Little Mix would “love to” collaborate with the U.S.-based quintet: “We think they’re so sexy and they’re amazing vocally. We would never say no.”
When they’re not supporting other musicians, the women are focused on supporting each other. “We just have so much fun when we’re together,” Pinnock shares.
And, no, they don’t fight. “I know that loads of people don’t understand how we’ve gone for this long and we don’t fight. We have more arguments with our own families than we do ourselves… We’re just really lucky. We just look after each other.”
With Glory Days, Pinnock says they hope to capture what she calls “the best days of our lives,” and tackle both love and heartbreak. The album includes a few mid-tempo tunes, and one ballad — which is Pinnock’s favorite. She also has high hopes for their newest single — “F.U.,” which was released on Friday.
“‘F.U.’ is basically about knowing that you’re with someone that’s not right for you, but you’re so in love with them that it just takes over,” she explains. “Every time you think you’re gonna have the strength to break up with them you just can’t because they do the tiniest little thing that makes you fall back in love with them again. That makes you forget about all the bad things they’ve done. It’s something that a lot of girls go through.”
While they’ve already managed success in the U.K. —”Shout Out to My Ex” debuted at No. 1— Pinnock says she and bandmates Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall are hoping to crack the U.S. Top 10.
There’s hopes, too, for a career something like the Spice Girls, Pinnock’s favorite girl group of all time. “I think we just love that they’re all about girl power. They stood up for what they believed in and they were never afraid to say what they thought.”
