What Lena Dunham, Serena Williams & More Stars Are Saying About International Women’s Day and the Day Without Women

Today, women across the globe are striking in honor of International Women’s Day — and a day without women, as the strike has been dubbed. Coming on the heels of the well-attended women’s march, women everywhere (men, too!) are speaking out, even if they’re not taking the day off work. For example:

Kerry Washington is picking up some empowering reading material.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is meme-ing herself.

Jenny Slate encouraged women to participate in the strike.

Alicia Keys suggested that if they’d like, they protest.

And got a little silly.

Bryce Dallas Howard is sharing who inspires her — her daughter.

Jessica Chastain is celebrating all ladies, but in particular, Antonina Żabiński, the woman she portrays her new film The Zookeeper’s Wife, who sheltered hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust.

Lena Dunham wrote an essay for LinkedIn about the importance of supporting immigrant women in the United States. She told the story of her friend, an undocumented immigrant, who attended one of many immigrant marches last month.

“My friend showed up to the immigrant march without question, not just for herself but for every woman like her who knows deeply that they deserve to claim America as their home,” she wrote. “Feminists have always been emboldened by the acts of immigrant women. Following their lead will never steer us wrong.”

Alyssa Milano encouraged others to change their profile pictures to a red block in solidarity.

Emma Watson sent people on a feminist scavenger hunt.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is sharing a sweet message from his son, Sebastian.

Priyanka Chopra shared an inspiring video.

Rowan Blachard threw it back to 1974.

Alec Baldwin shared his respect for the ladies of the world.

Josh Duhamel sent his love.

Adele made us laugh.

Madonna used a lot of emojis.

Jessica Alba wrote an essay for LinkedIn where she encouraged women to challenge the norm.

“At the end of the day, you may not make the rules – yet – but you can create the reality you want,” she wrote. “Embrace your differences, allow yourself the ability to grow, see through the challenges and be present in each aspect of your life.”
