Kylie Jenner Escapes Lawsuit Thanks to Her Instagram

All’s well that ends well, and this ended well, thanks to Instagram. You may recall that last November, Kylie Jenner was on the brink of being sued by Los Angeles-based makeup artist Vlada Haggerty for allegedly ripping off her work. In case that didn’t register on your radar, this was the specific image in question, which Haggerty shared in a side-by-side post. (We kind of see her point.)

Though Haggerty confirmed that she was set to take legal action, those plans may have been diverted, thanks to Kylie’s heavyweight status on social media. Four days ago, the lip-kit mogul posted one of Haggerty’s images, but this time, she credited and praised the artist. “This really is everything. Check out the wonderful makeup art of @vladamua!” Kylie gushed beside a pic featuring a set of lips dripping with molten rose-gold liquid.

Kylie’s next post promoted her own makeup line, which does feature a dripping liquid look similar to Haggerty’s, but it’s safe to assume that once Kylie had promoted the artist to her 84.2 million followers, she was somewhat in the clear.

Kylie Cosmetics sells its products under a logo that is so similar to the dripping lip art style that symbolizes Haggerty’s brand that Haggerty receives daily inquiries as to whether she is associated with Kylie’s brand.

Kylie wasn’t quite done with her (unofficial) apology tour yet, however. Yesterday, she took to Instagram to share the exact shot she’d been accused of copying — again, this time giving credit. “Check out this inspiring photograph from @juliakuzmenko and @vladamua!” she wrote. (Kuzmenko was the photographer who captured the pic.) For the record, Kylie isn’t the first person Haggerty has accused of stealing her imagery, but she is probably the richest.

While there’s no doubt that Instagram promotion from Kylie is worth its weight in liquid gold, you have to wonder what calculations were done to decide that posting would be the equivalent payout to a lawsuit (assuming they thought they could win). According to Forbes, Kylie is the second-highest earner in the Kardashian clan (topped only by her half-sister and original Kardashian star, Kim). Kylie earned a reported $18 million in 2016 — not too shabby for a 19-year-old.

The same week that Kylie seemingly made peace with Haggerty, she performed an act of kindness for her own best friend as well. On Jan. 17, Jordyn Woods‘s father died of cancer. Kylie first posted a sweet note to her BFF alongside a pic of the twosome during happier times. “My Fire Ox, My Brother, My Soul Sister. Give Jordy & her family some support and prayers right now. I love you the long way @jordynwoods. The other half of me,” Kylie wrote. “When you cry I cry.” But Kylie did more than offer words of solace; it appears that she put her money where her mouth is.

Woods’s mother had started a GoFundMe campaign seeking to raise $50K to help cover outstanding medical bills and funeral expenses. Five days later, they had raised $18K of that goal, $10K of which was donated by Kylie. In the note accompanying the donation, the contributor listed as Kylie Jenner wrote to Jordyn and her family, “I love you guys very much.” It’s pretty much impossible to confirm this was, indeed, Kylie, but it seems most likely that she wrote the check.

It also remains to be seen whether Kylie’s two posts promoting Haggerty are enough to quell the flames on that front, so if you see a third (or fourth) go up, you’ll know she’s still working down that debt.
