Kelly Rowland’s Family Is Dressing Up as Run-D.M.C. for Halloween

Halloween is a special time in Kelly Rowland’s household. Last year, the singer dressed as Minnie Mouse, while her baby boy, Titan, went as Mickey. And they couldn’t have been more adorable.

“He’s really starting to understand the holiday,” Rowland recently told Yahoo Celebrity of her son, who will turn 2 on Nov. 4. “He saw the hands come on, and he thought it was just the most amazing thing he’d ever seen. He saw himself in the mirror and he lost his mind!”

Since last year’s costumes were such a success, Rowland and her husband, Tim Witherspoon, are going all out this year. “We’re going to be Run-D.M.C.!” she revealed. “Me, Tim, and Titan.” And the outfits, of course, will be accented with the notorious rap trio’s rings, gold chains, and hats. “We’re really excited!”

Motherhood has been keeping the performer extra-busy these days. “Titan is totally in his terrible twos,” Rowland sighed. “He has a very strong personality. He’s getting into everything and testing me and his father constantly!” But the toddler age does have a few fun perks. “His dad taught him how to ride a scooter, and it’s so adorable. He can really push and coast and keep his foot on while he’s coasting. It’s crazy!”

The “Dumb” singer thinks her tyke’s new skills are impressive but confessed that she’s secretly gritting her teeth every time he hops on his scooter. “It just makes me nervous! He could fall and hurt himself,” she said, noting that keeping her family safe is a big priority these days. “I really believe in getting regular checkups. Being in tune with your body is really important. I’m kind of obsessed with going to the doctor.” Rowland, 35, admitted that she was “that mom” who rushed her son to the pediatrician’s office for every little thing during his first year of life. She has since learned to dial it back. “I had to bring it down because every time he was sick when he was smaller, we were at the doctor,” she laughed. “I had to get hold of that because those bills came, and I was like, ‘Damn! For a visit?’”

But as we all know, annual checkups and preventive care are very important. That’s why Rowland was eager to take part in a breast cancer awareness event at Ulta Beauty in L.A. this week, where she joined eight survivors for a day of beauty and pampering. The store has been a proud partner of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation since 2009 and has raised more than $14 million for the cause.

“[Breast cancer] is something that has affected me on a personal level,” shared Rowland. “For me, I just feel like as a woman, if I have information about breast cancer or breast cancer awareness, I feel like other women should know about it — whether it’s telling them to become knowledgeable about breast cancer and become knowledgeable about what’s going on with your body and self-testing. It’s time for us to be cognizant about what is going on with ourselves.”

Rowland is also big on giving back during the holidays — and hopes to pass that tradition along to her son. “We said this year we wanted to actually go feed people for Thanksgiving and also give out toys so he knows that giving is good and it’s needed,” she said. “I’d like to teach him that.”

Since raising a kid in Hollywood means having to work extra hard to avoid overindulgence, Rowland puts a cap on the amount of presents her toddler receives around the holidays. “For Christmas, we actually don’t give him a whole lot,” she shared. “We keep it pretty limited to like five presents. He gets so much during the year, and we don’t want to raise a little entitled brat!”

In addition to raising her son, Rowland is busy working on new music, a makeup line for women of all skin shades and types called For All Created Equal, and a supersecret self-help book, which is slated to be released in 2017. “I’m not allowed to talk about it yet, but I’m so f’ing stoked!” she exclaimed. “I’m so excited to share it with my fans.”
