Kanye and Kim Kardshian West ‘Still at the Polite Stage’ After Difficult Months of Discord: Source
The rapper took to Twitter on Dec. 27 to share a sweet family photo of himself with Kim and their two kids: daughter North, 3, and son Saint, 1. "They were focused on making it a fun Christmas for the kids," said a source at the time. "They hang out with the kids, but are not really getting along otherwise."
It’s been a difficult few months for Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian West.
Since his recent hospitalization for exhaustion, things have been awkward and odd for the couple, a source close to West tells PEOPLE. “Kanye and Kim are still in that very polite stage after a blowup,” the source says. “They’re getting along better, but it’s still a difficult time.”
The 39-year-old rapper is seeking “both psychological and spiritual help,” the source continues. “He’s committed to getting healthy.”
Last weekend, the couple took their two children — North, 3½, and Saint, 1 — to visit his mother’s grave, PEOPLE confirms.
“Kanye still doesn’t have closure about his mother, and I don’t know that he ever will. was unexpected, and he had no time to prepare for it. When the anniversary comes along, it’s like the wound is reopened. Some years, he does okay in managing it. Other years, not as much. This was a year where things went off the rails.”

A different source previously told PEOPLE that the couple’s marriage has been under strain since West’s health crisis hit — less than two months after his wife’s terrifying robbery at gunpoint in Paris. However, the family attended Kris Jenner‘s star-studded Christmas Eve party, even posting a photo of the four in front of an enormous Christmas tree from the bash.
The source close to West says that many of the couple’s conversations have been superficial, with a forced politeness as they try to work things out. “He might as well be talking to a stranger,” says the source.
But despite the rough patch, the couple is committed to making their marriage work. “They’re trying,” says the source, “but things are still raw.”
