Justin Bieber Shades the Weeknd on Social Media

Just in case you haven’t seen their PDA-filled exploits all over town, the Weeknd and Selena Gomez have been dating. Whether they’re one step away from the altar or just enjoying hanging out remains to be seen, and it seems that “insiders” have plenty of opinions as to which direction they’re swinging. But one person who apparently isn’t too pleased with these developments is Selena’s ex, Justin Bieber.

On the surface, the Biebs has been playing it relatively cool since he returned to Instagram last week. He’s posted a few random photos of himself in the studio, supplementing with a shirtless shot as necessary. But on Sunday night — when he skipped the Grammys in favor of doing pretty much anything else — he decided to stoke the fires.

While chatting away on Instagram Live during the Grammys, Bieber could be seen driving as a friend in the back seat asked, “What’s your favorite song?”

“‘Starboy,’ by the Weeknd,” Bieber replied sarcastically.

The two then broke out into gales of laughter, which stopped only after Bieber said, “We gotta end it now. That was too funny.”

You’ll recall, of course, that Bieber and Gomez were hot and heavy for quite a while, having met back in 2009 while discussing a possible business collaboration. Rumors of their coupling started in 2010 and were seemingly confirmed in 2011 when they did their first red carpet together at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. They officially split in 2012, and then briefly reconciled in spring 2013 (much to Taylor Swift’s chagrin).

Then they were on again, off again for another three years, with Bieber making public displays of Instagram affection and Gomez performing songs about their relationship. Things seemed to officially come to an end last summer when Gomez snarked on her Instagram about Bieber’s relationship with Sofia Richie.

Had Bieber been at the Grammys — or at least watching — he’d have seen the Weeknd perform a smidgen of that “favorite” song with Daft Punk, along with the hit “I Feel It Coming.” Later, the Weeknd connected with Gomez at Rihanna’s after-party. It’s safe to say that neither of them seems to be affected by Bieber’s snarky social comments. They’re too busy making out (see video below).

Meanwhile, Bieber appears to be stewing in his own juices, clearly not so chill about his ex hooking up with one of the music industry’s biggest stars. Gomez, prone to her own bouts of social shading, has stayed mum on the situation. Time will tell if this develops into an online scrap between former loves, or if Gomez will take the high road, leaving Bieber to vent his frustrations in increasingly petty ways.
