Just How Broken Up Are Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik?

Breaking up is hard to do — just ask Gigi Hadid. Since news hit that the 21-year-old model and Zayn Malik split, Hadid has been sending very mixed — and very public — messages about the status of their relationship. Her social media posts have been so confusing, in fact, that they have led some to question whether the young lovebirds broke up at all. ICYMI, here’s everything Hadid has shared since the breakup news broke.

On Thursday, June 2, Hadid met up with fellow “it” girl and bestie Kendall Jenner for lunch. Though Hadid reportedly looked “pensive and sad” over the meal, later that day her spirits seemed lifted as she and Jenner drove around town and mugged for silly photos while wearing big, floppy hats. (Hey, whatever works.)

Later that night, Gigi and Kendall teamed up with Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin for a girls’ night partying in West Hollywood.

The next day, however, it seemed that not even a night clubbing with her BFFs could shake her ex from her thoughts, as she shared a cryptic message via Snapchat implying she might already be having second thoughts about splitting from her boyfriend of seven months. The snap featured a greeting card with a drawing of a T-shirt with a heart on its sleeve and the message, “I know it’s obvious, but I love you.” Hadid accompanied the snap with her own brief message — no words, just a smiley face.

Later, she stepped out for dinner sporting a pendant with Malik’s initials on it — and that was just the beginning. While at the Maybelline New York Beauty Bash that night, she Snapchatted a video of herself lip-syncing Malik’s hit song “Pillowtalk.” Hmm.

“I love to hold you close, tonight and always,” the beautiful blonde mouthed into the camera. “I love to wake up next to you.”

Probably most confusing, however, was Hadid mentioning her “boyfriend” during an interview at that same event. Asked if she prefers spending nights out or nights in, Hadid didn’t miss a beat, saying she likes quiet evenings and rattling off a list of her favorite staying-home activities.

“Cook. Paint. Play with my dog. Hang out with my boyfriend. Watch movies. Just chill,” she said casually. To be fair, she could simply mean “boyfriend” in the proverbial sense, as in whoever is her boyfriend at the time, but still, taken alongside all of her other social media posts, it seemed like it could be more than a slip of the tongue.

It’s also probably worth mentioning that the next night, while (ironically) accepting the Our New Girlfriend award at Spike TV’s 10th Annual Guys Choice Awards, she claimed, “I have always been a good girlfriend, even when in middle school, when I have had crushes, I have always been kind of nice.” Maybe Hadid and Malik are already back together. Maybe they never really broke up. Or maybe she’s actually not only a good girlfriend but also a really good ex-girlfriend.
