JoJo Reveals the Shocking Way Her Former Record Label Forced Her to Lose Weight

JoJo is finally back on the music scene with her first album in nearly a decade set to drop in October. But the road to releasing Mad Love has been anything but easy.

This week, JoJo opened up to PopSugar about the difficulties she faced along the way to achieving musical independence and revealed that one experience in particular even “ended up messing with [her] psychologically.” The pop star explained that she was under a lot of pressure with her previous record label, which wanted her to “lose weight fast.” As a result, JoJo says they hooked her up with a nutritionist who put her on all kinds of supplements. “I was injecting myself — this is a common thing ‘the girls’ do all the way. It makes your body only need certain calories, so I ate 500 calories a day,” she revealed.

Ultimately, JoJo says it was “the most unhealthy thing [she’s] ever done.” After releasing The High Road in 2006, the now 25-year-old tried to gain control and break free from her label. The battle resulted in a contentious lawsuit that lasted for seven years and restricted her from putting out new music. In 2014, JoJo was finally released from her contract and signed with Atlantic Records. Last November, JoJo told Rolling Stone that she has her fans to thank for keeping her going when even she “was considering if it was even worth it, if anybody cared.”
