After a rough 2015, John Stamos is sober, healthy, and on a better path. And on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM show Monday morning, he talked about sobriety, the DUI arrest that sent him to rehab, and the root of his addictions: losing his mother.

Saying that he was “embarrassed” by the arrest, Stamos said that kicking his Ambien habit was even harder than the “booze and whatever.”

“I called a friend from rehab … and he said, ‘You know I want to tell you something.’ I said, ‘Yeah’ and he said, ‘The last time I talked to your mom before she died, she called me and said, “I’m worried about Johnny.”’ And it sort of broke my heart,” Stamos recounted.

Stamos’s mother Loretta passed away in September 2014. In June the following year, Stamos was arrested on suspicion of DUI after being pulled over in Beverly Hills. Stamos immediately checked into rehab and pleaded no contest to the charges, resulting in his being placed on three years of probation.

During the show, Stamos also talked about the upcoming Fuller House, and the “confusion” that led to his fight in the media with the Olsen twins over whether or not they would be involved.

“I think there was some confusion. They said first I didn’t ask them. And I didn’t personally, but I was told they were asked,” Stamos told Stern. “So I had a knee-jerk reaction and said, ‘Bulls**t, I did ask them.’ And they got upset, so I did call and talked to Mary-Kate and explained what the show is going to be and told them I’d love for them to be on there and they decided not to, which I respect.”

While the Olsen twins will not be involved with Fuller House, the rest of Full House’s main cast is. The new show will focus on Candace Cameron Bure’s DJ Tanner, who is now widowed with three children, which is nearly the exact same set-up as Full House’s pilot in 1987.
