John Legend on His Friendship With the Obamas: ‘You Kinda Pinch Yourself’

John Legend has friends in high places. The Grammy winner has become good buddies with Barack and Michelle Obama over the years, even performing at the White House on a few occasions. So when it came to executive-producing the new film Southside With You, which tells the story of the president and first lady’s first date one evening in 1989, John was the perfect man for the job.

“It’s such a great love story. We all know how it ended, but it’s exciting to see how it began,” the 37-year-old told The Insider With Yahoo. “Everybody’s feeling nostalgic about the last eight years, and we know we’re gonna miss having such a wonderful couple in the White House.”

While the singer is tight with POTUS, he admits the novelty of their friendship hasn’t worn off.

“We still get chills when we actually walk into the White House and get to interact with the first couple,” he said. “First of all because you know how much power they have and how impressive they are as individuals, but also how down to earth they are too, and how cool they are and how easy they are to talk to at the same time. You kinda pinch yourself when you’re just talking music or basketball or whatever you’re talking about with the president of the United States. The guy with the nuclear codes.”
