Jennifer Lopez may not be your mama, but she is still one of the biggest pop stars in the world, even 17 years deep into her hit-studded career. And as if she didn’t already have enough on her plate, what with her long-running Las Vegas show “All I Have,” a starring role on the cop drama Shades of Blue, and every head-turning red carpet appearance she makes in between, “Jenny From the Block” is now making her first foray into footwear design teaming up with Giuseppe Zanotti. And the beyond triple-threat sat down with Harper’s Bazaar for their December/January issue to talk all about her new line and her deep love of fashion.

Apparently, for Lopez, a good piece of clothing is just like a good song, “it takes you back to that period in your life,” she explains. “I do the same thing with my closet. I walk in and I see a hat or a pair of shoes or a coat, and I go, ‘Wow! I remember I was wearing that the day this happened, or I was walking down the street; or I heard this or my mom said that, or my boyfriend…’ You know what I mean? ‘And I was dating so-and-so…’”

An article of clothing that gives her an emotional reaction is the coat she wore to the hospital when she gave birth to twins Max and Emme, now 8. “It was in the middle of a snowstorm, and I wore this big white fur coat,” said Lopez, who shares the children with ex Marc Anthony. “I was huge, and it was the only coat that would fit me. Every time I see that coat, I think of the day my kids were born.”

So it seems only natural that out of this friendship a collaboration collection would blossom. The shoe designer plans to double down on their pop star power in 2017, designing a capsule collection with Zayn Malik as well as launching Giuseppe for Jennifer Lopez, which will be available in stores come January. Speaking about her work with the high-end heel purveyor, Lopez told the magazine, “I have a certain sensibility about the way I dress and design, and I just kind of handed that to him. People really associate me with sparkle and a little bit of street edge and things like that. I wanted to make sure the collection had that, but then some [styles] feel very glam and high-end fashion.”

And it turns out a heightened sense of fashion isn’t just specific to the “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” singer, it runs in the family. When it comes to her daughter Emme’s sense of style, Lopez enthuses, “She loves fashion. She was wearing my shoes as soon as she started walking. She’s actually learning to sew already. Who knows? We may have a little designer on our hands.”

She’ll undoubtedly grow up to rock those denim Rihanna-designed chap boots just as well as her mother too because no one ever said life is fair.
