The Fate of the Furious trailer has raced to top of the record books.
The first footage from the highly-anticipated eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise racked up 139 million views in 24 hours, breaking the worldwide record that Beauty and the Beast set just a month ago.
Universal turned the release of the trailer into an event, with director F. Gary Gray and the cast, including Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, presenting the clip live from New York on NBC’s Football Night in America, in addition to the franchise taking over Times Square as 33 digital billboards debuted the trailer.
Straight Outta Compton’s Gray is taking the helm for The Fate of the Furious, trying to follow up on the success of Furious 7, the highest-grossing film in the franchise, having made over $1 billion at the box office. The internationally successful series is continuing to take the films around the globe, with Fate making stops in Cuba, Antarctica, and New York City.
The Fate of the Furious, which also stars Tyrese, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, and Helen Mirren, flies into theaters on April 14.
