Emma Watson Talks the ‘Incredibly Subtle’ Gay Moment in Beauty and the Beast and the ‘Frustrating’ La La Land Rumors

For all the controversy surrounding the gay moment in Beauty and the Beast, there’s one person who had yet to speak on it — star Emma Watson.

But in a SiriusXM Town Hall interview with EW’s Anthony Breznican, the actress, 26, revealed that she loves Josh Gad‘s take on LeFou’s maybe-maybe-not crush on Gaston for its subtlety.

“I think that’s what’s so fantastic about Josh’s performance is that it’s so subtle,” Watson said. “It’s always like, ‘Does he idolize Gaston? Is he in love with Gaston? What’s the relationship there?’ I think it’s incredibly subtle, to be perfectly honest. I don’t want people going into this movie thinking there’s a huge narrative there.”

The actress also opened up about the much buzzed-about story that she had turned down Emma Stone‘s eventual Oscar-winning role in La La Land. Speaking for the first time about it, the actress admitted that all the talk surrounding her name attached to the project was frustrating as she was already committed to Beauty and the Beast well before it started.

“It’s one of these frustrating things where names get attached to projects very early on as a way to kind of build anticipation or excitement for something that’s coming before anything is actually agreed or set in stone,” the actress admits. “But it was one of those situations where I had been committed to Beauty and the Beast at that point for…years. And I had to be where I had to be, and scheduling conflict wise it just didn’t work out.”

Beauty and the Beast is in theaters March 17.
