Colson Whitehead reveals The Underground Railroad will hit No. 1

The Underground Railroad, Oprah Winfrey's latest Book Club pick, is set to hit the top of the New York Times Best Seller list, author Colson Whitehead announced Friday. The novel hit shelves earlier this month after Winfrey made it the latest addition to her coveted club.

"So, The Underground Railroad is going to be #1 on the [New York Times] bestseller list next week," Whitehead wrote on Twitter, going on to thank readers, Winfrey, indie bookstores, and his team.

Whitehead's novel tells the story of Cora, an escaped slave braving fearsome odds on a journey to freedom. The Underground Railroad was Winfrey's newest Book Club 2.0 pick, joining Cynthia Bond's Ruby.

“When I got the call, I let out a stream of loud, joyful expletives - which was awkward because my plane had just landed and everyone looked at me like I was crazy," Whitehead said at the time of the book club announcement. "Oprah has introduced so many wonderful books to people, from The Song of Solomon to The Sound and The Fury, that I’m honored and grateful that The Underground Railroad is joining such great company.”

The Underground Railroad is out now.
